Going to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam? In this installment of our Vietnam Travel Guide Series, we bring you on a day tour to Cu Chi Tunnel.

How to visit Cu Chi Tunnels in Ho Chi Minh

The Cu Chi Tunnels are an immense network of underground tunnels that was dug and used by the communist guerrilla troops known as the Viet Cong to combat the superior South  Vietnamese and American soliders. The Viet Nong used these tunnels to house troops, communicate and transport supplies as well as lay booby traps before disappearing into the safety of the underground tunnels.

Today, the Cu Chi Tunnels remains well preserved and a small part of it opened up for tourists to have an authentic experience of the military operations during the Vietnam War.

Cu Chi Tunnel Half Day Tour from Ho Chi Minh City

We were privileged to join a small-group tour with KKDay to Cu Chi Tunnel.   The Cu Chi Tunnels are almost a 2 hours drive from Ho Chi Minh city.  Along the way, we were given a pit stop at a workshop where victims of Agent Orange, a chemical warfare used during the Vietnam War earn their livelihood through the lacquer artwork that they create.

To get to the Cu Chi Tunnels, we were to walk through the same jungle  where the Viet Cong fought the American troops a few decades ago during the Vietnam War.

Off to the Cu Chi Tunnels

We started off our first foray into the tunnels with the easiest one –  this used to an underground well, and steps had been built for descent into the tunnels to make it easy for tourists.   The tunnel was especially dark and narrow, but fortunately, the distance was relatively short.  Easy peasy for a first try!

Time to graduate to the next level of tunnel crawling.   This was what a real tunnel entrance would look like during the war – camouflaged with natural cover to avoid enemy detection.  Only the Viet Congs would know where the entrances and exits of their tunnels were.

When opened up, the entrance was this small – only enough to fit one lean soldier at a time.

A demonstration by the park ranger on how to attempt this crawl, after which we were to experience this one at a time.

Step by Step to entering the tunnel.

Although the tunnels were open to the general public, people with health problems or have issues with small spaces are advised not to attempt the crawl.

Booby Traps by Viet Congs

Examples of the kind of booby traps that were laid by the Viet Congs.

The third tunnel was one to view the military bunker where hospital operations were carried out for injured soldiers.  This one was relatively easy because of the spaciousness and the lighting provided in the tunnel.

The last tunnel was the most challenging one – it was especially narrow and long with very little lighting.

A short crawl brings us to the military headquarters meeting room.

From the meeting room exists the most challenging crawl of all – one that involves a slight downward slope, and a long and winding tunnel. Fortunately there’s a shorter escape route if you do not wish to attempt the strenuous one.

On Site Shooting Range at Cu Chi Tunnels

There was also a shooting range on-site.  Depending on which kind of rifle you choose, the cost of the bullets can differ, but this is not covered with the cost of the tour.
