Going To Taiwan?  In this installment of our Taiwan Travel Guide Series, follow us as we enjoy a private hotspring at Volando Urai.

Taiwan Hotspring Spa Experience at Volando Urai

Today, we were going to experience a hotspring spa at Volando Urai.  Taiwan is known to be a hotspring haven.   Which was good news for us, because we would just love a dip in hot spring water to soothe those aching muscles after the intense walking, shopping and sight-seeing.

Hotspring water contain potent mixes of natural minerals and chemicals which gives rise to numerous health benefits.  The spring waters at different areas are known to have different compositions and properties.  At Wulai, their spring water are touted to have skin-enhancing properties.  Therefore, the hot springs at Wulai are sometimes also known as ‘Beauty Springs’!  The beauty junkie in me says ‘Yippee!’, because what better way to augment my daily skincare regime than a natural dose of spring water imbued with natural goodness from the earth!

Just like Beitou, there are several hot spring bathhouses in Wulai.   Our choice was Volando Urai Spring Spa & Resort, a premium hot spring bathhouse offering a holistic package experience.  A typical Volando package includes a private hot spring bathhouse for two, paired with either afternoon tea or a lunch set.

How to get to Volando Urai from Taipei

There are few ways to get from Taipei to Volando Urai.

1. Take the Volando Urai Shuttle from Xindian Station

Volando Urai provides a shuttle (@ NT $50 per person per trip) that runs from Xindian Station.  There is a fixed schedule for the shuttle and limited seats available on every trip, especially on weekends. Therefore, reservation of seats as early as possible is strongly recommended if you would prefer a comfortable ride up to Volando which is located on top of a hill in Wulai.

2. Take Bus Number 849 from Taipei Main Station or Xindian Station

The alternative would be to take bus number 849 either from Taipei Main Station (1hr journey, higher likelihood of having a seat) or from Xindian Station (30 min journey, unlikely to have a seat).

The third option is to hire a cab at Xindian Station, but that will come at a hefty fixed price tag of NT$680 (SGD$30) at the time of writing and is not recommended.

Private Hotspring at Grand View Bathhouse, Volando Urai

Lunch was followed by a 1-hr private hot spring experience at the Grand View Bathhouse.

‘Wow!’, was the first thought that came to my mind when shown to this private bathhouse.  What a view!  This was a picture of peace and serenity and I knew then I was going to truly relax and unwind my tired muscles during the 1-hr therapeutic experience here.

The bath house comes with a private shower, vanity table and amenities.  In other words, everything that is needed to make the experience complete.

Hot tubbing with a splendid view. How much better can it get? While Beitou is known for its sulphuric hotsprings which are said to relieve rheumatic aches and skin diseases, the waters here at Wulai are known for their sodium bicarbonate content which gives it its skin enhancing properties.

Since it did not contain sulphur, the spring waters here do not have an pungent sulphuric odour. Which was good, because you won’t emerge from the bath smelling like a rotten egg.

That’s the view from the panaromic windows.

If you want some privacy, there are window shades that can be drawn.

Remembering that these waters here had great benefits for my skin, I made an attempt to splash more of these beneficial spring water on my face.   Hmm, and indeed, my face did feel a lot firmer, the red patches on my complexion were mostly gone and my skin tone looked more consistent immediately. That’s after only 1 hr of soaking, imagine if you do this everyday!

What to see and do in Wulai

Wulai Suspension Bridge (烏來吊橋)

We emerged fully rejuvenated from an hour of pure bliss in the hot spring waters and decided to test our new found energy with a trip to Wulai Old Town.  This was not part of the package, but was done on the spur-of-the-moment because we had extra time on our hands while waiting for our shuttle back to Xindian Station.

Wulai Old Town is further down the road from Volando and is accessible via Bus 849 (the same one that would bring you from Taipei Main Station/Xindian Station to Volando).  The terminal stop of Bus 849 is only 2 stops away, and that was where we would stop to walk to Wulai Old Town.

At the terminal stop, we found a reason to stop and gawk at this splendid view of the Wulai Suspension Bridge.

From the suspension bridge are some of the best views of the Wulai hilly region.

Wulai Old Town (烏來老街)

Wulai Old Town is a short walk away from the suspension bridge.  Just follow the signage and you will get there.

Before that, we identified the bus stop for Bus 849 that would take us back to Volando Urai.  From Volando Urai, it is easy to catch the shuttle back to Xindian Station.

The start of the Wulai Old Town.

This place is like a mini-Jiufen but at slightly cheaper prices and minus the insane crowds.

Highly recommended to try are these eggs cooked in the hot spring waters of Wulai.  You won’t find them anywhere else.

Another highly recommended stall is this one selling Taiwanese aborigine-made sausages.

You just need to look at the length of the queue to know how popular it is!

I love to eat roast pork, but I just hate to see it in this state.

2 hours was all we needed to cover the Wulai Suspension Bridge and Wulai Old Town.

Within half a day, we experienced a Wulai hot spring, a gourmet restaurant meal, saw beautiful scenery of the region and walked through the Wulai Old Town for an authentic experience.
