It is so popular in Taiwan that locals and tourists spend hours queuing up for it. So here we are in the wee hours of the morning to see what the hype was all about.

Be There As Early As Possible
Never have we gotten up so early for breakfast. However, the only way to avoid the queues was to be an early bird and be there as soon as they open. Fu Hang Dou Jiang starts operations from 5.30 am, except for Mondays where they are closed. We braved the cold winter morning and left our hotel as soon as the Metro begins operations to get to Shangdao Temple (BL13). From Shangdao Temple Station, Fu Hang Dou Jiang which is at Level 2 of Huashan Market (華山市場) is within walking distance.

Despite our best efforts, there was already a small crowd when we reached at 6:30 am. There was however no major queues here and we were able to get our orders within 10 mins of waiting in line. During its peak time, the queues here are said to snake down from the staircase at Level 2 and all the way around the Huashan Market building.

What to eat at Fu Hang Dou Jiang (阜杭豆漿)
The best things that you must try at Fu Hang Dou Jiang are their Soy Milk (豆漿) and Fried Dough Sticks (油條). The Soy Milk (NT30, around SGD$1.30) here are very smooth and unsweetened which allows you to taste the fragrance of the beverage itself. I especially like the fact that it leaves no sweet aftertaste in the mouth.

There are some mixed reviews about the Fried Dough Sticks (NT25, around SGD$1.10) here, but I personally think that it was great. For an item that has undergone deep frying, there is relatively little oil on its surface. Instead, what we got was a crispy dough stick that still retains its softness inside. It is so far the best dough sticks we ever had. In fact, we ordered some for later consumption and it still taste great (although not as good as the fresh ones) after several hours.

We also highly recommend trying the Savory Soy Milk (鹹豆漿) (NT35, around SGD$1.50) if you are feeling a little more adventurous. It deviates quite greatly from the traditional soy milk. Instead of a smooth liquid consistency, the savory soy milk is slightly curdled, giving it a texture not unlike a Chawamushi. It also has other added ingredients such as pieces of fried dough sticks and vegetables to create an overall unique taste. Seldom can we find this in Singapore, so we highly recommend that you give it a try.

The next item that is highly recommended are their Shao Bing (燒餅). It comes in a thick or thin crust version, and you choose the fillings of either an egg, a fried dough stick, or both.

As mentioned earlier, Fuhang Doujiang (阜杭豆漿) is located on the second level of Huashan Market. It is actually one stall within a food court with free seating spaces. However, in the early morning, the majority of dining are actually only there for Fuhang Doujiang (阜杭豆漿).

There’s also a glass-enclosed preparation area where we get to see the chefs in action.
