Extending a far distance into the wetlands is a boardwalk with lots to see if you have got sharp eyes.  However, visitors are strictly not allowed to get off the boardwalk and venture into the wetlands until they reach the end of the boardwalk.  There are hefty fines in place as a deterrent.

Wildlife at Gaomei Wetlands

What is seen as white pebbles in the sand are actually thousands of fiddler crabs migrating across the mud plains.

It takes a pair of sharp eyes to spot the mudskippers, for they are so well camouflaged in the mud. But there, we found quite a number during the time taken to complete the boardwalk.

Mudskippers
Mudskippers are amphibious fish, meaning that they can leave water for a length of time. They possess fins that functions like legs when they are out of water, allowing them to crawl or leap on land

Further away from land, the population of fiddler crabs dwindles, to be replaced by these round looking spider crabs. You’ll catch huge families of these crabs migrating over the mud plains at any time. If you have the time to observe them, you may also be able to see them feed.

Spider Crabs
Spider crabs are so populous here, it will be quite impossible not to spot them

Birds exist in abundance here, which is not surprising given that this is one of the best places for them to look for food. You may even be able to even spot a crane or two – although they were too far from the boardwalk for us to take a nice picture when we were there.

Getting into the mudflats

Visitors are not allowed to get off the boardwalk until they reach the very end of it. That’s where people start taking off their shoes and wade into the mud.

At the end of the boardwalk where the cluster of people are is the only entryway to the mudflats

Gaomei Wetlands – The Place Where You See the Most Beautiful Sunset in Taichung

With the wind turbines as your backdrop and the sun setting below the horizon, Gaomei Wetlands is one of the most romantic places in Taichung to see the sunset.

Waiting for the sun to set in the horizon is an experience itself

As we had quite a lot of time on our hands, we sat down on the edge of the boardwalk to await the sunset.

Those who do not wish to wade in the mud can opt to find a good seat and wait for the sun to set
