Our main aim of getting to Vancouver was to embark on the Rocky Mountaineer’s famous train ride and package to the famed Canadian Rockies. So after a most gruelling long flight from Singapore to Los Angeles and then connecting to Alaska Airline flight to Vancouver and staying overnight at the airport hotel, we finally arrived at the day when we made our way to Vancouver city itself!
Vancouver is constantly ranked as one of the most livable cities in the world, and ever since we first stepped foot onto this cosmopolitan city en route to Alaska four years ago (yes, it was that long ago!), I have been in love with this city ever since. Hotels in Vancouver city can however be rocket high, and in order to save a bit of money for the rest of our Canadian Rockies adventure, we opted for a more budget-friendly option – YWCA Hotel Vancouver.

Its all about location, location, location when it comes to our choice of hotels. And the YWCA Hotel Vancouver fits the bill nicely because it occupies a central location in Vancouver city. Nicely tucked away at Beatty Street, it is just around the corner from Robson Street (think shopping) and a short walk from Chinatown (think dim sum breakfast).
The check-in process was relatively fast and efficient. Staff were sufficiently friendly and knowledgeable. We even had a package delivered to this hotel before we arrived (a result of my online shopping), and the hotel staff had that ready for us at check-in when we arrived. So all in all, we were pretty satisfied with the service.
Don’t even think of having ambience here, because this is a budget hotel! But having said that, the lobby and general surroundings are clean and bright enough, nothing over the top and very basic, but good enough for those on a budget.
beVancouver.com Room Promotion
We booked a double double room (which means there are two double beds in a room) due to a beVancouver.com promotion that resulted in this room being cheaper than a smaller one. Because of this, we had more space although we had no use for the other double bed.
Tip : Check out the promotions at beVancouver.com. They have great rates that gives you prepaid AMEX Gift Cards of up to $125 to reward your booking AND an additional $50 AMEX Gift Card for every subsequent night you stay! Our two nights’ stay at YWCA Hotel Vancouver only cost us around CAD $63 per night after the discounts!
Photo taken from the other end of the room to give you a better gauge of the room size. Despite this being a double double room, this was still a little smaller than the room we had at the Four Points Sheraton Vancouver Airport. But it served our purpose well enough as a short stay-over.
My only grievance with this room was the condition of the bed. Squeaky, saggy and without any support, it caused me many tosses and turns at night that resulted in poor quality sleep – not very good for a traveler who had traveled halfway around the globe and needed some good rest!
Small Functional Bathroom
The bathroom is very small, but at least clean. Cleanliness and an in-room bath room is all I ask for when on a budget. Basic toiletries are provided.
