Going To Bali, Indonesia?  In this installment of our Bali Travel Guide Series, we make a trip to Mount Batur Volcano at Kintamani Ubud.

Dining with a View of Mount Batur Volcano

Today’s lunch was at a restaurant called Sari, located up a small hill opposite the Mount Batur volcano.  Despite our earlier grievances about the tactics used by our tour guide to bring us to restaurants that he earns commissions from, we had to agree that Sari Restaurant was a good venue for lunch, because some of their seats were facing Mount Batur directly.

Reserve a Prime Seat in Advance with Your Guide

Photo of Mount Batur, taken directly from my seat facing the volcano.  My eyesight is not very good, and at first, I had thought that there was a glass window in front of the seat.  It was only when I reached out that I realised it was open-air seating! And I had thought that the air-conditioning was strong.  In fact, the air was naturally colder due to the higher altitude that we were in.

Our seats can be considered as prime space, because there were limited numbers of such seats in the restaurant, and I guessed our guide must have called in advance to reserve those seats for us.

Best View of Lake Batur, Bali’s Largest Crate Lake

From our vantage point, we could see as far as the crescent-shaped Lake Batur, surrounded by the high walls of the crater rim. Lake Batur is the largest crater lake in the whole of Bali.

Mount Batur Volcano Hiking Tour

Mount Batur volcano is actually an active volcano, its last eruption dating back to 1999. There are daily hiking tours up the mountain to catch the beautiful sunrise at the peak of the mountain, but these tours usually start at around 2am in the morning, and requires some amount of physical fitness, both of which sounds very daunting to me.  As you can imagine, I absolutely gave that a miss and made do with the views of the volcano at the restaurant.

Food at Sari Restaurant

After enjoying the beautiful scenery, we heard our stomachs growling and realized that its lunch time! Time to look at the menu…with the scenery of course!

Mango juice and Carrot juice.  One of those very affordable things in Bali are their fruit juices. They are relatively cheap (at $2-3 SGD), and absolutely undiluted, unlike those in Singapore.

Must Try Food in Bali – Crispy Duck

Another dish to sample in Bali are their crispy duck.  We are used to fried chicken in Singapore, but have so far never seen or tried fried duck before. This one tastes good, but we just could not get used to the oily skin of the duck.  The crispy duck was the most expensive main course in the menu at 95K rupiah, which converts into SGD $10.

I opted for the safer option of Nasi Goreng (60K rupiah = $6.40 =SGD).

The same restaurant offers a buffet lunch as well, but we reckoned that with our tight time schedule, we could not afford to sit here for long to make the best of the buffet lunch.

Enjoying the view of Mount Batur while breathing in cool and crisp mountain air is a luxury and I wished we could have stayed here longer.

Our lunch for two came up to 21K rupiah, which converts to about SGD $22.  Not too bad, given the scenery that we enjoyed throughout the meal. Food-wise, it was just average, but the view more than made up for it.

Final Verdict

Great views, average food, average service, relatively high prices as compared to other restaurants in Bali.

We suppose there must be other similar restaurants offering similar views of Mount Batur along the same street, but if you do not mind mediocre food, this is the address of Sari Restaurant.
