The Rainbow village was initially developed to house war veterans and their families after the war. The government later announced plans to demolish the village and redevelop the area.
One veteran soldier started painting bright and colorful murals on the walls of this home and the surroundings. This quickly gained the awareness of the public, and the demolition plans were shelved. Today, this has evolved to become one of the top tourist attractions in Taichung.

A Village Like No Other
Going to the Rainbow Village is like stepping into a fairy tale. You get to appreciate the vibrant life-size murals of animals, dolls, and Chinese mythological creatures, all painted by Grandpa Rainbow, the war veteran who is responsible for painting the wall murals in the village.

Entrance Fee – Free For All
There is no entrance fee, but you can make a voluntary donation. Alternately you can pay a small token sum to have a picture taken with Grandpa Rainbow. Grandpa Rainbow is, at the point of writing, 97 years old and still makes a regular appearance at the village to the delight of visitors.
