Fengjia Night Market (逢甲夜市) is the largest night market in Taiwan. It is so huge that we had to devote 3 entire evenings to cover it adequately. Its proximity to Fengjia University means that there are lots of trendy and fashionable shops around, so it makes for great shopping.

Want to indulge in gastronomic delights at Fengjia Night Market but don’t know where to start from? We list down the best foods that you must try at Fengjia Night Market.
1. Wen Zhong Lao Dian (溫宗老店) Deep Fried Sweet Potato Balls (炸地瓜球) – Best Food at Fengjia Night Market
If there’s one thing that I’ll urge you to try at Fengjia Night Market, it will be this one. I’ve never even liked sweet potatoes before this. This deep fried sweet potato balls may have been immersed in oil, but the end product did not feel oily at all. The skin is fried to perfection, giving it a unique crunchiness. The inside is soft and fluffy and carries a light touch of sweetness. This is one thing that I will gorge myself on over and over again – never mind the calories.

2. Cia Cia Fu (甘梅署條) Plum Flavoured French Fries – Must Try Food at Fengjia Night Market
Never leave Fengjia Night Market without trying this! Said to be the only stall in Taiwan, we have honestly never seen this at other night markets. There’s always such a long queue when we pass by this stall every single night, and by the third night, we just had to satisfy our curiosity. Each stick of fries is larger than what I would have liked, but its coating of sour-sweet plum powder complements the potato perfectly. Its unique taste is something that you can’t get anywhere else. Best eaten piping hot during the cool winter months.

3. Charcoal Grilled Massage Chicken (碳烤按摩雞排)
I am a huge fan of fried chicken cutlets from Taiwan. However, during this trip, we found that charcoal grilled chicken cutlets were becoming more prevalent than the fried ones.
This Charcoal Grilled Massage Chicken (碳烤按摩雞排) is considered one of the best you can get at Fengjia Night Market. The queue here is horrendous – we waited for at least 30 mins to get to the front. The reward was the most tender and juicy chicken we ever had, grilled to perfection and sprinkled with chilli powder which I loved. One packet is more than enough to feed two.

4. Yixin Vegetarian Food (一心素食)
This is a famous eatery that the locals frequent and has 3 main things on their menu – stinky tofu (臭豆腐), fermented vegetables (泡菜)and mee sua (麵線). It is always packed to the brim and you hardly will ever be able to find a seat unless you are very early or you get lucky.
The best thing to try here are their stinky tofu. The first bite may be intolerable, but you will soon find that stinky tofus (臭豆腐) are an acquired taste. If you want to try stinky toufu, this is the place you must go to. Pack it as a take-out if you cannot find a seat at the eatery.

5. Da Jia Yu Tou Cheng (大甲芋頭城) Taro Balls
Taro Balls are my favourite Taiwanese desserts and the best ones we ever had was in Hualien and Jiufen. At Fengjia Night Market, the best Taro Ball dessert you can get is at Da Jia Yu Tou Cheng (大甲芋頭城). This is a small stall that is located outside Yixin Vegetarian Food. They have a variety of hot and cold desserts, but our recommendation is to try the assorted mixture(綜合)one which includes taro balls, yam paste, sweet potato balls, red beans and pearls in a bed of ice.

6. Golden Fried Jumbo Squid (黃金炸魷魚)
Fried jumbo squid are a must-eat at Fengjia Night Market. I would love to have multiple helpings of this even though I am not a seafood nor squid lover. For NT100 (about SGD$4.30), we had a huge box of fried squid, cut into bite-size and sprinkled with a flavoring of your choice. There are a whopping 12 flavorings to choose from! We highly recommend trying the Spicy Salt and Pepper or Thai Lemon. The jumbo squids used here are very fresh. If you like squids, I assure you that you will come back for more.

7. Ri Chuan Zhan Yu Xiao Wan Zi (日船章魚小丸子) Octopus Balls
This may be one of the most prominent and popular stalls at Fengjia Night Market. A favourite with the locals, you’ll see amazingly long queues here every single night. Each octopus ball is fried individually under close surveillance and capped off with a topping of seaweed. It is not overly oily nor does it carry the fishy smell that other octopus balls usually has. No wonder it is so popular. A must-try!

8. Minglun Pancake (明倫蛋餅)
Located just next to Ri Chuan Zhan Yu Xiao Wan Zi (日船章魚小丸子) Octopus Balls is one branch of Minglun Pancake (明倫蛋餅). Minglun Pancakes also has a huge crowd of people around the stall to add to the chaos at Ri Chuan Zhan Yu Xiao Wan Zi (日船章魚小丸子) Octopus Balls. However, instead of a queue system, they operate a ticket system where people wait around for their orders to be prepared. This is another local favourite. There’s another branch of Minglun Pancakes in the inner streets of the night market, but it is unknown which is the original store.

9. Demon Chicken Cutlet (惡魔雞排)
We asked a local to recommend the best things to eat at Fengjia Night Market and Demon Chicken Cutlet (惡魔雞排) was his recommendation. Apparently, the fame of this stall has spread far and wide in Taichung. So much so that there are imitation stalls around, so do check that you are going to the correct one. The chicken cutlets here are indeed tender and juicy and the skin somewhat different from the usual fried chicken cutlets that I am used to. It may be a personal choice, but I think I still prefer the original Shilin Fried Chicken Cutlet and Angel Chicken Cutlet (which also has a presence at Fengjia Night Market).

10. Tiger Sugar Bubble Tea (老虎堂)
If you are looking for brown sugar bubble tea which is very popular now, Tiger Sugar is one of the best in the market. It originates from Taichung, so where better to try this great beverage than at its birthplace itself. At Fengjia Night Market, we had to wait in line for 20 minutes before we could get our hands on this popular drink. If you are in a dilemma over which beverage to choose from the menu, why not try their signature Brown Sugar Boba Milk. Those with a sweet tooth will love this.

11. The Alley Bubble Tea (鹿角巷)
If you have the space to stomach another bubble tea, do go to The Alley. Just like Tiger Sugar, The Alley is another bubble tea chain founded in Taichung, albeit with a longer history. Try their Brown Sugar Deerioca Milk which is their number 1 selling beverage.

12. Jing Tian Wu Matcha (京田屋茶)
I added this in just in case you are a matcha lover as I am. If you are looking for matcha beverages, then you’ll come to the right place because this is a tea house specializing in matcha. The beverages are a little too dilute for my liking, but it has got to do with my preference for a more intense matcha flavor. The price is absolutely cheap at NT35 (about SGD$1.50) for a basic Uji Matcha (宇治抹茶) – something that you will never get in Singapore. We first tried this outlet at Fengjia Night Market, but later found out that they have outlets at Taipei as well.
