Fan Fan Chicken Wings (飯飯雞翅)

Top on our list of things to eat is Fan Fan Chicken Wings (飯飯雞翅). This stall is half of a larger stall called Lu Si An (鹿司岸). The other half of it sells fried prawns which looked amazing as well. However, the winner here is Fan Fan Chicken Wings (飯飯雞翅), popular with both locals and tourists.

What’s so amazing about Fan Fan Chicken Wings (飯飯雞翅) is that the chicken wings are all de-boned and stuffed with rice that is unique to the indigenous Thao tribe.

Spring onions, cucumber, chilli and pepper are then added according to your preference. If you are one who likes spicy food, we suggest asking for more servings of chilli paste and pepper, for these are the magic ingredients that make this dish taste so good.

Roasted Millet Muah Chee (Mochi)

The muah-chee here at the Sun Moon Lake is different from the rest of Taiwan because they are made from a special species of millet that is unique to the Thao tribe. In addition, they are molded into a rectangle and then roasted over fire. Spices and flavorings are added according to your preference. This is again something that we’ve never seen in other parts of Taiwan!

The best roasted muah chee comes from this stall called Ah Bu Sha Meng An Thao Tribe traditional food (阿布莎夢安邵族傳統美食). They also sell another type of popular street food – barbecued wild boar skewers.

My seaweed flavored roasted muah chee which is bigger than my hand. It is so good, I wish I had the stomach for a second helping.

There are many other stalls selling roasted muah chee, but they are not as good as Ah Bu Sha Meng An Thao Tribe traditional food (阿布莎夢安邵族傳統美食). For example, the muah chee from this stall was half the size at the same price!

Another must-try is the twirled muah chee as seen below. There is only one stall selling this and it is located opposite Ah Bu Sha Meng An Thao Tribe traditional food (阿布莎夢安邵族傳統美食).

The President Fish (總統魚) is also known as the Aruzay and is one of the varieties that breeds extensively in the Sun Moon Lake.

When former President Chiang Kai-shek visited the area, he was served with this fish. Thus from that time onwards, the Aruzay became known as the President Fish. This fish is usually served steamed, and you can find it at local restaurants serving Thao cuisine.

The Chi Li fish (奇力魚) is a rather small fish and is one of the famous traditional dishes of the Thao people. It is also called the Kellett and is usually served fried and crispy. You’ll likely find it at local restaurants or as a street food.  Both of these fish are a must-try at the Sun Moon Lake.
