If you happen to find yourself at Yong Kang Street (永康街) of Taipei, Taiwan, you will find that you have landed in a foodie street. In this installment of our Taiwan Travel Guide Series, we share our review of Xiao Yuan Tian Unagi Restaurant (小原田永康店), previously known as Xin Tian Unagi Restaurant (新田鰻味屋) at Yong Kang Street.

Xiao Yuan Tian Unagi Restaurant – A Great Place for Japanese Food in Taipei

Yong Kang Kang Street in Taipei, Taiwan is a great place to be in for foodies. It is full of good restaurants and cafes, including the original Din Tai Fung (鼎泰豐), Smoothie House, and lots of good beef noodles.

But on our latest visit to Yong Kang Street, we found that the place is populated by many Japanese unagi restaurants as well! Since we didn’t have any particular one in mind to try, we randomly picked out Xin Tian Unagi Restaurant (新田鰻味屋).

Discover Book Travel Note:

The restaurant is now known as Xiao Yuan Tian Unagi Restaurant (小原田永康店) after a recent change of ownership. Dishes remained as good though!

Unagi Rice Bento

We of course came in with the intention of trying out their Unagi (Japanese grilled eel over rice). You can order it as an ala carte item, or part of a set meal. The unagi here is very well done, not overly greasy but very tender and tasty. I ordered this ala carte and chose the small portion which cost NT280 (about SGD$12.40). Although it wasn’t very cheap, the portion was huge and very satisfying.

Roasted Chicken Ramen

This chicken ramen came with 2 sticks of roasted chicken served separately. The highlight however was the ramen itself – very bouncy and chewy with a great texture! At NT180 (about SGD$8.00), it is hardly cheap going by Taiwan’s standard of living, but it still is a very good thing to have.
